Nitrate and Ammonium Deposition in the Midwestern Fragmented Forest

چکیده

Whereas the impacts of N deposition on forest ecosystems have been well studied in remote areas predominantly forested landscapes, we know relatively less about forests heavily human-modified landscapes. We influence adjacent land use, local point sources, and woodlot stand structure subcanopy transport enrichment via throughfall three fragments southern Lower Michigan, USA. found that one site had markedly higher TF concentrations compared to other two; however, our data indicate elevated resulted from differences tree species composition, rather than surrounding use. Specifically, observed abundance basswood (Tilia americana) was positively associated northern red oak (Quercus rubra) negatively with concentrations. One greater fluxes two, which driven by a lack understory vegetation, possibly due deer browsing at this site. Together, results study demonstrated were more strongly influenced internal characteristics fragmented woodlots, such as

Deposition of ammonium and nitrate in the roots of maize seedlings supplied with different nitrogen salts

This study measured total osmolarity and concentrations of NH(4)(+), NO(3)(-), K(+), soluble carbohydrates, and organic acids in maize seminal roots as a function of distance from the apex, and NH(4)(+) and NO(3)(-) in xylem sap for plants receiving NH(4)(+) or NO(3)(-) as a sole N-source, NH(4)(+) plus NO(3)(-), or no nitrogen at all. The disparity between net deposition rates and net exogenou...

Deliquescence, Efflorescence, and Water Activity in Ammonium Nitrate and Mixed Ammonium Nitrate/Succinic Acid Microparticles

We have investigated the thermodynamics and kinetics of ammonium nitrate/water and mixed ammonium nitrate/succinic acid/water microparticles. The water activity of ammonium nitrate microparticles is determined as a function of composition down to 12% relative humidity by accounting for the rapid evaporation of ammonia and nitric acid. Both the observed deliquescence and water activities for amm...

Nitrogen isotopes as indicators of NO(x) source contributions to atmospheric nitrate deposition across the midwestern and northeastern United States.

Global inputs of NO(x) are dominated by fossil fuel combustion from both stationary and vehicular sources and far exceed natural NO(x) sources. However, elucidating NO(x) sources to any given location remains a difficult challenge, despite the need for this information to develop sound regulatory and mitigation strategies. We present results from a regional-scale study of nitrogen isotopes (del...

The Characterization of Ammonium Nitrate Mini-Prills

Ammonium nitrate (AN) is commonly used as a fertilizer and is the fundamental ingredient of industrial explosives [1]. It has been observed that one of the most important factors that affect explosive performance of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil is the prills volume of porosity. The large amount of porosity identified in explosive grade AN prills allows for an absorption rate between 12 and 16 ...

The regulation of nitrate and ammonium transport systems in plants.

Inorganic nitrogen concentrations in soil solutions vary across several orders of magnitude among different soils and as a result of seasonal changes. In order to respond to this heterogeneity, plants have evolved mechanisms to regulate and influx. In addition, efflux analysis using (13)N has revealed that there is a co-ordinated regulation of all component fluxes within the root, including bio...
